DIFFERENCES EXAMINED

SERMON ON THE MOUNT AND PLAIN

As its name says this document examines each episode in detail, following on from the previous Differences Compared. It examines dialogue, which can be more easily seen as identical or different by the green highlighting and the absence of the English. It also examines location and chronology with a conclusion being made. In most events which are compared, it can be clearly seen which events are the same, or different but similar.

          These extracts from the Detailed Examination again examines the sermon on the Mount, which is dealt with first and then the Sermon on the Plain. The comparison is only included after the Sermon on the Mount as it also refers to the Sermon on the Plain. A repetition is not necessary. Hyperlinks do not work here on the webpage.

59. THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT.                                            ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Matt. 5:1

1        But seeing the multitudes, he went up to a mountain: and having sat down, his disciples

  came to him:
2        And having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying,

          See Differences Compared Matthew 5:1

A       A comparison of Matthew 5:1-7:29 commonly called “the sermon on the mount,” to Luke 6:17-49 commonly called “the sermon on the plain”

1.       The location is not the same. Matthew 5:1-7:29 is set on a Mount in Galilee, presumably beside the Galilean Sea near Capernaum. (Matt. 8:5). Luke 6:17-49 is set on the plain (Lk.6:17) after being up on the mountain. (Lk.6:12) and having come down. (Lk.6:17)

2.       There are some similarities in subject matter such as “love your enemies” and “judge not” but mostly it is different.

3.       There is almost no dialogue in English or Greek, in the two sermons that is identical. The Lord’s prayer, Matt. 6:9-13 is basically the same as Luke 11:2-4 but that is not included in the sermon on the plain. The differences in Greek are highlighted in Green.

4.       The sequences of events, which is the chronology is as follows;

Matthew 5:1-7:29                               Luke 6:17-49

          Jesus’ temptation.                                Healing Peter’s mother in law.

          Jesus calls the disciples from fishing.  Jesus teaches on John the Baptist.

          Jesus went about all Galilee.               The disciples eat the corn on the Sabbath.

          Jesus teaches on the Mount.              Healing the man with a withered hand.

          Jesus heals the leper.                          Jesus chooses the twelve.

          Healing a centurion’s servant.             Jesus teaches on the plain.

          Healing Peter’s mother in law.            Jesus heals a centurion’s servant.

          The chronology is different, so the context is different.

5.       There are differences in content. Luke’s Sermon on the Plain is much smaller and the Lord’s Prayer while included in the sermon on the Mount is not included in the Sermon on the Plain but occurs while Jesus is going up to Jerusalem to be crucified.

Conclusion The context is not the same, the dialogue is not the same, the location is not the same therefore the two events are different events.

B       A comparison of the Lord’s prayer Matt. 6: 9-13 and Luke 11:2-4.

1.              The location is not the same. Matthew 6: 9-13 is set on the Mount in Galilee, presumably beside the Galilean Sea near Capernaum and is one of the teachings amongst many contained in the Sermon on the Mount. Luke 11:2-4 is set in a certain place on the walk to Jerusalem. It is the result of a request by the disciple that He teach them to pray.

2.       Words highlighted differ in the Greek.

3.       The sequences of events, which is the chronology is as follows;

          Matthew 6:9-13                                 Luke. 11:2-4

          Jesus went about all Galilee.               Jesus visits Martha at her home.

          Jesus teaches on the Mount.                Jesus is praying in a certain place.

          The Lord’s Prayer.                           The disciples ask to be taught to pray.

          Do good for the sake of God.              The Lord’s Prayer.

          Teaching on forgiveness.                    Teaching on persistence.

          The chronology is different, so the context is different.

Conclusion.  The context is not the same and although the dialogue is essentially the same, the differences are still substantial. The two events are therefore not the same.

2.       There are substantial differences in the Greek dialogue. Words highlighted above are different.

3.       The sequences of events is different, which is the chronology is as follows;

          Matthew 6:9-13.                                Mark 11:25-26.

          Jesus went about all Galilee.               Jesus enters Jerusalem.

Jesus teaches on the Mount.                Jesus curses the fig tree.

          Do good for the sake of God.              The widow’s mite.

          Teaching on forgiveness.                    The disciples prepare the Passover

Conclusion.  The location is different, the chronology is different and the dialogue is quite different. The two events are not the same events.

2.       While much of the Greek dialogue is the same, nevertheless the sense is often different for sometimes Matthew has a question while Luke has virtually the same words but they form a statement. Words highlighted above are different.

3.       The sequence of events is different, so the chronology is different;

           Matthew 6:9-13.                               Luke 12:22-30.

          Jesus went about all Galilee.               Jesus sets his face to go to Jerusalem.

not worry about your life.                Do not worry about your life

          The Lord’s Prayer.                              Jesus laments over Jerusalem.

          Do good for the sake of God.              The triumphal entry.

          Conclusion.  The context is not the same and although the dialogue is similar, the differences are still substantial. The two events are therefore not the same.

The following is the Sermon on the Plain showing the differences in the Greek text only, as the above document, the Sermon on the Mount gives all the detailed comparison that is necessary. It is not necessary to repeat it.

105. THE SERMON ON THE PLAIN.

Lk. 6

17      And descending with them, he stood on the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all

          Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

18      Also those who were tormented with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

19      And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
